When it doubt, try this simple power-on circuit:

                      \  10K 1/4w
                      /
                      \
                      /
                      |
                      +-------------------> to reset pin
                      |
                      | +
                    ---
                    ---    100uf  16v  electrolytic gives ~1 second reset
pulse
                      |
                      |
                      |
                   ----
                    ---
                      -

This is a generic reset circuit that I have used with just about
everything.
